Article: Breathe – it changes everything

Breathe – it changes everything

Breathe – it changes everything

Riding isn’t just about what you do – it’s about how you feel while doing it.
And one of the first things that changes when you feel pressure, nerves, or frustration is your breathing.

It becomes shallow, tight, almost held without you noticing – and your horse feels it.
Your body stiffens, your seat becomes less following, your hands less soft. Not because you don’t know what to do, but because your body isn’t working with you.

Sometimes, the biggest improvement doesn’t come from riding more, but from doing less.
Take a breath, slow down, and let your body soften before you ask your horse for more.

The next time you ride, start in walk — that’s where it’s easiest to feel.
Let your breath follow the rhythm of your horse. Inhale for about 4 steps, then let your exhale take a little longer — around 6.

Again, and again.

With every exhale, allow your shoulders to drop and your seat to soften.
There’s no need to hold your breath — that often creates more tension instead of less.
Think of it as a quiet flow, not something you need to control.

It’s a small shift — but it changes everything.
Your horse feels it. And so will you.

🤎 Do you notice how your breathing affects your riding?
